New ship class gives Celebrity an “Edge”

Celebrity Cruises will add two ships under a new class, dubbed Project Edge, to build upon the Millennium and Solstice-class vessels already in its fleet. Delivery of the first two Edge-class ships is expected in the fall of 2018, with the second vessel to follow in early 2020.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. signed a letter of intent with the STX France shipyard to build the new designs for Celebrity Cruises.

As yet unnamed, each ship will carry 2,900 guests, weigh 117,000 gross registered tons and measure 984 feet long, 123 feet wide and 190 feet high, sized for small-ship itineraries with large-ship amenities in the premium cruise market.

“The addition of two Project Edge vessels to our fleet delivers on our long-term strategic plan of moderate capacity growth, and continues the positive momentum the Celebrity brand has achieved in the premium segment of our industry,” says Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of parent Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

As might be expected from eco-conscious Royal Caribbean, the new Celebrity ships are to have environmentally friendly designs using cutting-edge technology for significant fuel efficiency, while making extensive use of sustainable materials.

STX France enjoys a reputation for designing and building some of the most innovative and stylish cruise ships in the world. Celebrity’s Project Edge anticipates new standards for modern maritime architecture.
